Functional Medicine Testing and the Difference From Western Medicine

Contrary to popular belief, western medicine is symptom suppression medicine. It does not address cause and effect of health problems. Many of the diagnostic tools in western medicine are dangerous and poses a threat to your health (x-rays, CT scans, and mammograms all radiate the body which is a known cause of cancer). Western medicine has only two tools to suppress your symptoms: drugs and surgery which are both dangerous and have side effects.

Functional medicine on the other hand finds and corrects the cause of your symptom/disease/diagnosis/illness/dysfunction.

HOW IT WORKS: It is a medical fact that 95% of all health problems are caused by improper lifestyle factors that you control (what you eat, what you drink, how you exercise, how you think, how you sleep, how you talk, how you poop). Functional medicine uses modifications of these lifestyle factors as the tools to correct your health issues. Modifying these lifestyle factors is not only extremely safe, effective, and 100% backed by science, but it greatly enhances the overall function of the human body and mind.

THE TESTING: Functional medicine in our office assesses over 30 different biomarkers through urine and saliva analysis as well as a physical examination. Urine and saliva testing is used to look for imbalances in your biochemistry. We use urine and saliva instead of blood because they are more dynamic fluids than blood, meaning we can pick up on problems in your biochemistry much sooner and more precisely. In the physical examination, there are no needles or radiation, and does not require the examiner to touch or look at sensitive areas (breast, buttocks, or reproductive organs). The exam is perfectly safe for people of any age.

WHAT TO EXPECT: What you will experience in our office with a functional medicine examination is a 45-minute session to comprehensively discuss your health issues and goals as well as perform a comprehensive examination as described above to assess your imbalances and dysfunctions. Over the next 12-24 hours this data will be extensively analyzed and a plan will be constructed to address the imbalances found during the examination. On a follow up visit, we will explain in easy to understand language what was found in your exam and what you need to do to address the problems. The tools used to address the problems will be lifestyle modification factors (as described above) tailored to your specific needs.
